What’s better than Cat6?

What’s better than Cat6?

It seems like everything is networked via Wi-Fi these days. Those in the know understand this: For reliability and speed there needs to be a foundation based on a hard-wired connection. Hardwired connections aren’t subject to the same electrical and radio frequency interference as Wi-Fi. Copper cable in particular is backwards compatible with previous standards, unlike fiber optics.

So the question remains. If the current residential standard is Cat6, what standard does the future hold? We expect Cat6, which runs at 1Gbps at a bandwidth of at least 500MHz to be the standard for many years to come however it’s good to keep an eye on what may be next…

  • Cat 6a: Speeds up to 10 Gbps with a bandwidth of 500MHz, introduced in 2008; available in shielded versions only.
  • Cat 7: Came out in 2010, increasing bandwidth to 600 MHz using more shielding.
  • Cat 7a: Another leap in bandwidth to 1.2 GHz.
  • Cat 8: Used primarily in data centers, Cat 8 takes speeds up to 40 Gbps and bandwidth to two GHz over a reduced length of 30 meters.
