What is Class 2 low voltage lighting?

The National Electric Code (NEC) requires that low voltage power supplies and electrical wiring be Class 2 compliant. Low voltage lighting generates far less heat compared with high voltage lighting and saves money on your power bill, but there is still electricity involved. Class 2 lighting fixtures contain no electronics in the fixtures themselves. The dimming control power conversion and constant current drivers for multiple fixtures are housed in a remote DC, Class 2 intelligent power supply, which can be located up to 150′ away from the fixtures.

New construction requires a work permit that must be obtained from a local safety or electrical inspector. When checking low voltage LED lights and systems, the inspector will check to see if the power supplies are accessible and Class 2 compliant. They will also check to see if the fixtures are approved by a National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), such as Underwriter Laboratories (UL) or Intertek (ETL).
