Planned Power Outages

The best way to stay energized.

PG&E customers in Northern and Central California will be without electricity today (10/9/2019), because the power utility will be shutting down energized lines in an attempt to prevent wildfires. More than 800,000 customers will be affected and it is not clear how long the outage will last. What is known is that re-energizing the circuits take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours. *

Other communities will certainly take notice of this new PG&E practice. In Malibu for example, SCE has given the City a 48-hour notice that a PSPS may be implemented affecting Western Malibu Thursday, October 10, at 9:00 PM to Friday, October 11, at 9:00 AM. *

Southern California Edison (SCE) has given Malibu a 48-hour notice that a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) may be implemented that could leave thousands of people without power.

Keeping the lights on

So what can you do to keep the television, lights & freezer on while the rest of your neighbors are thrust, unceremoniously, back into pioneer times?

You have a couple options. The first option is to buy a generator. The second is to buy a large format battery system like the Security Plus II Large Format UPS from Surge-X. Generators use gas or diesel fuel and introduce horrible, dirty power into your electric system, potentially damaging sensitive components. Large Format batteries are more efficient and provide much cleaner power that a generator does since the AC (alternating current) wave form is created from smoothly supplied DC (direct current).

For installation environments with backup power generators installed, a large-scale UPS solution is critical. Backup generators do not provide power precisely at the moment of the outage due to their exercise period. During that window, total loss of power can force the entire system to go down, often times, locking up the system to the point that a hard reboot is needed to restore functionality.
Additionally, generators provide very dirty power, which can fluctuate depending on the components drawing power from the generator. In addition to spontaneous outages, noisy power is a common power condition than can damage the sensitive electronics within AV systems and result in unnecessary replacement and repair or system-wide lockups.

Large format battery systems should be used in conjunction with generators, solar panels and energy arbitrage systems. Together, they work synergistically to provide power when it’s unavailable from a power utility as well as clean the power, eliminating the damaging voltage variations and transient spikes. To help you select the best large-format UPS solution for your home or project, Haas Entertainment offers “white-glove service” which includes a complimentary on-site visit to discuss best practices, verify load calculations and double check environmental factors to ensure the correct solution is selected. After your purchase we work with the manufacturer to ensure the solution is wired and provisioned correctly.
