Who’s Down With OBC?

Object Based Contrast, the difference is not black & white, it’s color!

Television companies are always thinking of new ways to make the picture better. As a photographer I would adjust my contrast in the darkroom by using different filters etc. Once I graduated to Adobe Photoshop I manipulated contrast using the Levels & Curves controls. After I became advanced I learned to adjust color and contrast on individual parts of the image. With enough skill and acquired knowledge one can really make a photograph “Pop” with color and contrast.

Television is based upon the same fundamentals however instead of adjusting a still photograph, the TV’s processor is doing it 60 times per second, sometimes more. The moving image is essentially re-mastered on the fly. If you have a fast enough processor in your television, that is to say, you bought the top of the line, then your TV is very likely capable of adjusting contrast at the object level.

Look at the image above. (You should see it alternate from standard contrast to OBC. With Object-based HDR remaster (1), the color in individual objects on screen is analyzed and the contrast adjusted, unlike most TVs where contrast is only adjusted along one black-to-white contrast curve (2). Because objects are remastered individually, these TVs can reproduce greater depth, textures, and more real pictures.

Before purchasing your next TV ask if it has OBC remastering. If they don’t know the answer, consider purchasing your TV at Haas Entertainment.
